Home Improvements
Over the next 12 months, we will be carrying out a programme to ensure all our homes have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) tells us how energy efficient your home is. An EPC is a graph a bit like the sticker you get on a new fridge or freezer which tells you about the appliance’s energy performance.
Typically, an EPC contains:
- Information about a home’s energy use and typical energy costs.
- Steps to improve a home’s energy efficiency and save money.
Around 74% of our homes have a current EPC, but we’re planning on having 100% over the next 12-18 months.
The EPC allows us to see what energy efficiency improvements we can make to our homes to make them more energy efficient – making your home warmer and saving you money on your energy bills.
We are planning on completing 2,000 EPC surveys on outstanding homes over the next year starting in June 2024.
The Government has set social landlords a target of bringing all their homes up to a minimum of an EPC rating of C by 2030 and we have set this out as one of our Business Plan objectives – to decarbonise our homes by 2050.
Reducing our carbon use across our homes and businesses is really important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid dangerous climate change in years to come.

What is an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)?
An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) tells us how energy efficient your home is. An EPC is a graph a bit like the sticker you get on a new fridge or freezer which tells you about the appliance’s energy performance.
Typically, an EPC contains:
- Information about a home's energy use and typical energy costs.
- Steps to improve a home's energy efficiency and save money.
Why do you need an EPC?
We’re improving the energy efficiency of our homes to achieve one of the goals in our Strategic Business Plan: to decarbonise our homes and businesses by 2050.
The Government has set social landlords a target of bringing all of their homes up to an EPC rating of a minimum of C by 2030.
The EPC will allow us to see whether we can improve your home to make it warmer, and save you money on your energy bills.
Which areas need an EPC?
We’ll be carrying out EPC surveys in these areas:

What are the benefits to me if energy efficiency work is completed?
All the works we carry out are free for residents, and there are a lot of benefits, including:
- Your home will be warmer.
- Energy efficiency will contribute to lower household bills through less use of heating.
- A warm home helps support mental health.
- Reduced carbon emissions is better for the environment.
- You can help support your neighbours or community through being a resident champion.
How will this benefit Plymouth Community Homes?
- It will help us achieve our target of being net zero by 2050, cutting carbon emissions.
- It will help us achieve our Mission – to provide a high-quality home for everyone, and our Vision – providing homes and communities where people want to live.
- Helps us to address fuel poverty - 18.4% of housing association residents within the UK’s 2.7million homes are in fuel poverty.
- Will help our tenancies increase in length and reduce the number of homes that are void.
- Help Plymouth to become a greener city.
