Building on last year’s Kite Flying Festival and previous Respect Festivals, the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council (PDREC) held a joint event on Plymouth Hoe. The aim was to bring people of all ages, abilities, and cultures together to celebrate the diversity of the city. The vibrant Festival took place on Plymouth Hoe on 27.07.24 with plenty of colours and community engagement, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere for all attendees.
The event featured kite-making workshops in the lead-up, where participants explored the cultural importance of kites throughout the world. These workshops provided a hands-on opportunity for people to learn about and appreciate the traditions and significance of kite flying in different cultures.
On the day of the festival, there were two stages with continuous community performances. These included cultural music, songs, spoken word, and dance, showcasing the rich diversity of talents and traditions within the community. The performances were a highlight of the event, drawing crowds and promoting unity and celebration.
Rheinallt Huws, a Communities Worker at PCH, attended the event with a helping hand from PCH resident Woody, both participating in the litter-picking event and helping to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of Plymouth Hoe during the festivities.
Rheinallt Huws said “It was such a pleasure to help at the festival. Plymouth Hoe provides a beautiful backdrop to any event, and it was fun to share and be part of the celebrations. It was a lovely afternoon”.
The festival was a remarkable success, bringing together an estimated 2000 people who enjoyed the free, colourful, and engaging activities.
