Local communities across Plymouth celebrated Easter last week, hosting several eggcellent events in various locations in the city.
We took a trip to Mount Wise Community Centre, where an event hosted by Zebra Collective with support from Plymouth Community Homes and members from the Local Police Service was proving popular.
Zebra is a community group based at the centre with an experienced team committed to high-quality work towards a more just and sustainable society, aiming to restore Mount Wise Community Centre back to life as a much-used community space through events and providing a local youth club.
The event was thriving with children and parents enjoying arts and crafts, snooker and a very popular bouncy castle. Upon arrival at the centre, residents were greeted by the Easter Bunny accompanied by a tower of chocolate eggs, kindly donated by AWL Group.
We met with Marc Gardiner, co-founder of Zebra and a previous PCH tenant until last year, who now runs the centre with Debbie Freeman who leads Zebra’s community & youth work in Plymouth.
Taking on an 11-year lease and operating from this location since 2024, Marc mentions the positive impact and progress the centre is having on the local area:
"We took on the lease from the council and it's great to see the place is coming back to life, busy with residents and improving by the day.”
Shelley Bedford, Youth Club Volunteer at the centre, said:
"We discussed bringing Zebra here as it’s a good space for the community and it's been going well so far"
It’s been an amazing event today, seeing all the kids smiling and the community coming together"
Lucy Cook, Housing Officer at Plymouth Community Homes said:
"It's been a successful day coming together with local partners, bringing the community closer and providing residents with an Easter fun-filled day, thank you to AWL for the eggs and Zebra partnering on the event “
Meanwhile, residents at Morley Court gathered for their annual easter event, where plenty of coffee, tea and easter eggs donated by Jackson Lifts were shared. The highlight of the event was the egg & spoon race where children went head-to-head with a VIP special guest.
The Easter Bunny said:
“There was a lack of carrots but plenty of Easter eggs for the children donated by Jackson Lifts. I didn’t do well in the race, but I’ll be back again next year.”
We spoke to Erick, a resident at Morley Court who attended the event with his daughter:
"We enjoyed today, we really appreciate PCH putting this event on for us.
This was our first event at Morley Court for my daughter and I and she really enjoyed it."
